JOB TITLE: Principal Chemical Engineer

JOB DUTIES: Principal Chemical Engineer for Nalco Company at its facility in Naperville, IL. Apply chemical engineering, project management, and other principles, theories and concepts to assignments where precedents may exist plus working knowledge of other related disciplines. Provides solutions to the design of complex systems and programs and/or the resolution of problems requiring state of the art awareness of the terminology. Develop new chemical treatments and processes related to separation and purification of bitumen from oil sands. Develop and deploy new chemistries and assists in the technical sale of these products. Develop laboratory tests to ensure treatment effectiveness, specifically examining the interfacial characteristics of bituminous sand. Develop and deploy new treatment programs for inclined plate separators, centrifuges and primary settling vessels within the bitumen extraction processes found in the Alberta Oil Sands deposit. Provide solutions to Oil Sand tailings settling, tailings thickening, tailings flow modification and tailings dewatering. Plan, run and interpret field trial results and communicate to sales and marketing. Work with marketing to understand the industrial fit and present, as the technical expert, to customers in the form of customer facing meetings, talks & symposiums and technical papers. Conduct research in Bitumen separation and purification, Bitumen viscosity reduction, and Fundamental Understanding of Bitumen-Water-Sand interactions. Utilize knowledge of Rheological Science including experience designing experiments, collecting data and interpreting the data from these experiments. Perform process simulation in the following areas: napthenic and parafinnic froth treatment, Solid-Liquid Separation, Consolidated Tailings and Mature Fine Tailings treatment. Design experiments that will simulate the above processes which include: centrifuges, Incline plate separators, clarifiers and hydrocyclones) and evaluate chemical additives to help improve those processes. Interpret data and refining both the method and the chemistry as needed to solve the problem. Work with JMP and Minitab programs and utilizing these programs to evaluate data, internally or externally generated to determine its statistical significance and predictive trends.

REQUIREMENTS: Requires a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Interfacial Science. Experience must include four (4) years post-bachelors progressive experience in all of the following. Experience can be gained through education, training or experience: Rheological Science including experience designing experiments, collecting data and interpreting the data from these experiments; Process simulation in the following areas: napthenic and parafinnic froth treatment, Solid-Liquid Separation, Consolidated Tailings and Mature Fine Tailings treatment; Designing experiments that will simulate the above processes which include: centrifuges, Incline plate separators, clarifiers and hydrocyclones) and evaluate chemical additives to help improve those processes; Interpreting data and refining both the method and the chemistry as needed to solve the problem. Experience must include post-bachelor’s progressive experience in all of the following: Experience working with JMP and Minitab programs and utilizing these programs to evaluate data, internally or externally generated to determine its statistical significance and predictive trends. Up to 30% travel required.
